About Northney Farm Tea Rooms

Family Run & Family Focused

Our family have lived and farmed on Hayling Island for over one hundred years, owning the market garden at Stoke Fruit Farm and the shop at West Town since the 1920’s.

Andrew Wilson took over the management of Northney Farm in 1952 after Harvey Brown became ill and the company A H Brown Ltd. was formed.  When Andrew died in 1993, his children Simon and Mary, carried on farming until they decided to divide the farm.

Simon and his family grow cereals, potatoes and run the farm shop and Mary and her husband, Stan, run the dairy farm.

Our dairy farm has a herd of 120 pedigree Ayrshire cows producing high quality milk which is very suitable for ice cream and cheese. Some of our cows are crossed with our Aberdeen Angus bull, Brooklyn, and this produces excellent beef cattle.

Mary and Stan’s children, Tim, Matthew and James, are all involved in the farm. Tim set up Northney Dairy Ltd. in 2008 and started making ice cream using our own milk and is now also bottling semi-skimmed milk, all of which are for sale in the tearooms.

Built on the site of redundant stables, Northney Farm Tearoom opened in July 2011 as a diversification of the main dairy farm business and is managed by James. The adjoining barn has been rebuilt in oak using traditional methods.

This replaces a 1750’s barn which collapsed in 1996 and is used for exhibitions and displays. Photographs and more information about the farm can usually be seen in the barn.

Extension to the Northney Farm Tea Rooms

We have extended the indoor seating and kitchen area of the tea rooms and reconfigured the serving area to increase capacity and meet growing demand.

This was part funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development with a grant from the Sussex Downs & Coastal Plain LEADER Local Action Group.
